What Is Escrow Payment and How Does It Work in Nigeria?

If you have ever sent money to a vendor you found online and spent the next three days refreshing your DMs, you already understand the problem escrow solves. Somebody has to go first. With a normal bank transfer, that somebody carries all the risk.

Escrow removes that risk by putting a neutral party in the middle.

What an escrow payment is

An escrow payment is a payment held by a third party until both sides have done what they agreed. The buyer pays, but the money does not go straight to the seller. It sits in escrow. When the buyer confirms they received what they paid for, the money is released to the seller.

Neither side has to trust the other blindly:

  • The buyer knows the seller cannot walk away with the money before delivering.
  • The seller knows the money is real and committed before they ship or start work.

Escrow is an old idea. Property deals and large business contracts have used it for a long time. What is new is that it is now simple and cheap enough to use for everyday online purchases.

How escrow works in Nigeria, step by step

On XcrowPay, a typical transaction looks like this:

  1. The seller creates a transaction. They enter the item, the price and the buyer's email, or the buyer's WhatsApp number for an Easy Transaction link. XcrowPay generates a secure payment link.
  2. The buyer pays into escrow. The buyer opens the link, sees the price and fees, and pays by bank transfer in Naira. The seller is notified that payment is confirmed, but cannot touch the money yet.
  3. The seller delivers. They ship the item or deliver the service, knowing the payment is already secured.
  4. The buyer confirms and the seller is paid. Once the buyer confirms receipt, the funds are released to the seller's registered bank account.

If something goes wrong (the item never arrives, or it is not what was agreed), either side can raise a dispute before the money is released. The funds stay locked while the XcrowPay team reviews evidence from both sides.

If the buyer simply goes quiet and never confirms, both parties are notified. If no dispute is raised, the team reviews the transaction and releases the funds to the seller, normally within 2–3 days.

Who holds the money?

This is the most important question to ask any escrow service. On XcrowPay, funds are held through our payment partner Korapay, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria. The money is not in the seller's account and not in the buyer's account. It is held until the transaction is settled.

XcrowPay is a registered Nigerian company (RC 1913302).

What does escrow cost?

On XcrowPay the buyer pays a single escrow fee at checkout, on top of the item price. The fee is tiered by transaction size: 7% for amounts up to ₦100,000, falling step by step to 0.19% for very large amounts. There is also a flat ₦100 service fee. There is no subscription or setup cost, and the seller receives the full price they set.

You can see the full table on the pricing page.

When should you use escrow?

Use escrow whenever you are paying, or being paid by, someone you don't know well enough to trust with the full amount. Common cases in Nigeria:

  • Buying from a vendor on Instagram, WhatsApp or Telegram for the first time
  • Buying a phone, laptop or other gadget from an individual seller
  • Paying a freelancer, or getting paid as one, for a project
  • Crypto P2P trades, where neither side wants to release first
  • Any deal where a fake payment alert would hurt the seller

For a small purchase from a shop you have used many times, a direct transfer may be fine. The bigger the amount and the less you know the other person, the more escrow is worth it.

What escrow does not do

Escrow protects the payment. It does not inspect the goods for you. If you are buying something where quality matters, agree the details in writing before you pay: model, condition, size, delivery date. Keep the chat. If a dispute ever happens, that written agreement is the most useful evidence you can have.

Getting started

If you are a seller, you can create a protected transaction and send the link to your buyer in a few minutes. If you are a buyer, ask the seller to send you an XcrowPay link instead of their account number.
